D-306 Darkwings Gift Set

Out of all the Japanese exclusive Transformers, Darkwings is one of the less desirable due to the fact that it really isn't that different from the American release; so it follows that there are probably more of these available out there than say, Minervas. But that doesn't mean it isn't as cool or unique as some of the other exclusives. Now Dreadwing is the American counterpart to Darkwings, made up of Dreadwind and Darkwing. Of course Darkwings is actually the combined form made up of the individuals Hydra and Buster. With so many darks and dreads and wings it is very easy to get confused and it took me a long time to be able to sort them all out. Even now I still get a little confused.

I've always really liked the American Dreadwing set so it was nice to obtain the Japanese version. The only real difference I can discern is the substitution of red in place of light blue and the chrome on the godmaster partners. Everything else, including all the stickers is exactly the same. I know this because unfortunately the only thing this set was missing was the stickers. Instead of spending agonizing weeks and perhaps years trying to find the original sticker sheet I just bit the bullet and ordered a set from Reprolabels. The color combinations in these figures is somewhat unique so they stand out in a sea of others.

When the sets are compared side by side you can really see how a simple color swap can make such a drastic difference.

But it is the combined form that really shines.

I'd like to thank Heroic_Decepticon because without this help, this purchase would never have been possible. If you'd like to see more pictures of this figure in the box, check out his post here.

  1. Sweetness! One of the few Japan-only giftsets I want to add to my collection before I call it time (eventually) as far as G1's are concerned!
